2021 Season Overview
The second season of the Del Mar International Composers Symposium featured innovative programs of exciting new music, more of the finest performers based in the San Diego area, and the opportunity to interact with emerging composers from around the world.
Overview at a glance:
- DMICS was held from August 3-11, 2021, in a variety of venues around Del Mar, with interactive live events and concert performances.
- A new cohort of Composition Fellows presented their works and ideas as part of the festival, alongside the music of talented student composers.
- The excellent Hausmann Quartet returned as Ensemble-in-Residence, and all performing artists at DMICS 2021 appeared thanks to a generous grant from DMICS' Lead Sponsor, the Del Mar Foundation.
- Continuing our focus on intimate chamber music, DMICS expanded to include vocal music and contemporary art song, as we were joined by the brilliant soprano Tasha Koontz and pianist Peter Walsh.
- DMICS presented two exciting concerts of new music, along with interactive panel discussions, presentations by Composition Fellows, and open rehearsals showing the collaborative process between composers and performers.
- For the first time, DMICS invited student composers who had their music workshopped and recorded as part of the festival. Students received lessons and mentoring from DMICS Fellows, participated in composition forums and discussions with our guest artists, and experienced the inspiring warmth and beauty of Del Mar and San Diego.
